Periodontology

It is a branch of dentistry which deals with diseases affecting the gums and supporting structures of teeth. Diseases of the gums are almost seen in all age groups. This can manifest commonly as bleeding of the gums, known as gingivitis to more severe conditions affecting the supporting bone of the tooth called Periodontitis or Pyorrhea resulting in shaking of teeth. If this disease is left untreated it leads to loss of tooth.
The Department of Periodontics provides instruction and clinical experience dealing with the etiology, diagnosis, prevention and treatment of gum diseases in adults. Also, Periodontics not only deals with the natural dentition but also has its responsibility towards the placement and maintenance of health of a dental implant too.
The goal of the department is to provide the undergraduate with a strong educational foundation in Periodontology for their future careers in dentistry and to contribute new knowledge through basic and clinical research in Periodontics. The undergraduate training programme commences in the 3rd year with lectures and practical exercises and continues till end of final year. During clinical postings, students have the opportunity of examining the patients and arrive at a diagnosis and treat patient with the suitable plan treatment.
The department is well equipped with the latest equipments such as laser, microsurgical instruments etc. and different type of procedures are performed by the students and faculty members on daily basis in the OPD such as:

  • Bone Grafting around teeth
  • Implant Placement and Sinus lift procedures
  • Periodontal Plastic Procedures
  • Crown Lengthening Procedures
  • Treatment of Black gums & Gummy Smiles
  • Laser and Electrocautery Assisted Procedures
